Shoko Yoshihara’s Paper on Land Issues in the Era of Depopulation Published by Springer
The Frontiers of Real Estate Science in Japan, including a chapter detailing the “Realities and Challenges of Land Issues in the Era of Depopulation” by Research Fellow Shoko Yoshihara, has just been published online by Springer as part of its New Frontiers in Regional Science: Asian Perspectives series.
The paper analyzes the alarming rise of abandoned and unclaimed land in Japan, where the population is dwindling and property values are falling, including in big cities. Using the results of a nationwide survey targeting 1,719 local authorities, the author reveals a disconnect between the existing landownership system and rapid demographic changes.
