How Japan Can Meet Global, Domestic Challenges and Develop the Human Resources Needed for a Brighter Future: Sasakawa Peace Foundation–Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research Joint Symposium Report
January 17, 2024
‘Cracks’, are ubiquitous in the contemporary world, running through Asia, the Pacific, India, the Middle East, Europe, and various places in the international community. Japan finds itself right in the midst of the global ‘cracks’ as well.
Domestically, the rapid decline in birthrates has wounded the Japanese society, leading to issues of labor shortages, sparking challenges across employment, regional vitalization, elderly care, disaster response, education, and human development. Every facet of the society is now exposed to transformation.
On the flip side, the ever-growing digital revolution has globalized the flow of people, goods, funds, and information, blurring the boundaries between domestic and international, resulting domestic life to be increasingly intertwined with convulsive changes in the ‘cracked’ world. Faced with the domestic shortage of talent due to the rapidly declining birthrates, how can Japan address the expanding and deepening ‘cracks’ on the global stage? This challenge, spanning international affairs and domestic human development, is certainly one of the most significant hurdles facing Japan’s trajectory. In fact, the challenge is not the local issue for Japan but for people in many countries and regions, standing against their future trajectories.
Despite this, few occasions are known up to the present, where experts in international affairs and human development have gathered to discuss the themes across international issues, national security, and human learning/education, all of which intersect the abovementioned challenge.
In this symposium jointly organized by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research, in fact the first collaborative symposium ever held by the two organizations, experts in international affairs and human development came together to engage in lively discussions and share their perspectives on the path Japan and the world should pursue amidst the global upheavals.
This video provides all the substantial scenes of the symposium, communicating the wide and intensive discussions of experts with immersion and reality. We hope that the footage will serve as a meaningful opportunity to anyone, who is aware of the turmoil now occurring in the world, to contemplate the path Japan and the world should take.
